Terms of Service

Last updated: August 17, 2026

These terms govern your use of Gesture Synth. By accessing or using the site, you agree to be bound by them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Authoritative version

This page is a translation of our terms of service provided for your convenience. The English version is the authoritative legal text. If any conflict or ambiguity arises between this translation and the English version, the English version prevails.

1. Acceptance of terms

By accessing or using Gesture Synth you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to any of these terms, do not use the service.

2. The service

Gesture Synth is a free, browser-based musical instrument that uses your webcam to track hand gestures and turns them into music in real time. It runs entirely on your device via your browser — there is no install, no account, and no server-side processing of your video. The recordings you make stay on your device unless you choose to download or share them.

3. Attribution and licensing

Gesture Synth is a re-skinned version of an original open-source tool by Ethan and Eric. The underlying hand-tracking and audio engine remain under their original open-source license; the credits and attribution appear on every page in the footer. This site adds internationalization (10 locales), modern SEO metadata, a Share dialog for recordings, and a WebM recorder — all distributed under the same open-source terms as the underlying engine.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to use Gesture Synth to: (a) violate any law or any third-party right; (b) attempt to reverse-engineer or extract source code beyond what the open-source license permits; (c) interfere with the service, related infrastructure, or any other user's enjoyment of it; (d) use any recordings, audio output, or derivative works for unlawful, harmful, or infringing purposes.

5. Your content

Gesture Synth does not upload, store, or transmit the video from your webcam. Recordings you create stay on your device until you choose to download or share them. You are solely responsible for any recordings or outputs you choose to share, including ensuring you have the necessary rights to any audio or visuals captured in them.

6. Intellectual property

The site design, layout, copy, and original artwork are © their respective owners and may not be reproduced without permission, except as the underlying open-source license allows for the engine itself. The hand-tracking model (MediaPipe Hand Landmarker) is © Google and used under its open-source terms. Trademarks and brand names belong to their respective owners.

7. Third-party services

Gesture Synth uses the following third-party services that have their own terms and privacy policies: Google Analytics 4 (analytics.google.com/policies), Google AdSense when enabled (adsense.google.com), MediaPipe Hand Landmarker (developers.google.com/mediapipe), and Cloudflare (cloudflare.com/privacypolicy). Your use of these services is governed by their respective terms.

8. Disclaimer of warranties

Gesture Synth is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that it will meet your particular requirements.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall we, our contributors, or our licensors be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenues, data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, arising out of or in connection with your use of (or inability to use) Gesture Synth.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any change. Material changes will be highlighted on the homepage for at least 30 days. Your continued use of Gesture Synth after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable to the operator of this site, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. If any provision is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect.

12. Contact

For questions about these Terms, email us at the address listed on the Contact page. We aim to respond within 30 days.
